Award-winning, singer, songwriter, social-activist, Paula Cole comes to the Narrows Center for the Arts on October 10. (NarrowsCenter.org)

Paula Cole has been entertaining countless fans around the world for two decades, with her jazz, rock and soul based music and intelligent lyrics. If you aren’t already well acquainted with her work or don’t count yourself as one of her legions of fans, it is likely the name is a familiar sounding one. That’s because she was introduced to the world as part of the lineup during the extremely popular Lilith Fair tours in the 1990s, before breaking out on headlining her own shows promoting seven albums worth of material over the years.

Or perhaps, you’ve heard some of the myriad of rave reviews from critics like Rolling Stone: “An extraordinary songwriter with a gorgeous voice,” Entertainment Weekly: “…a feisty poet with a soaring voice and a funky groove.” etc. Even her peers speak of her in glowing terms as Peter Gabriel did when he said “Paula is an original voice both in what she is saying and how she is saying it.”

20 years, 7-time Grammy nominated, Grammy winning, and 7 albums later, Paula Cole is still doing what she loves.

Fans, critics and peers are all in agreement that there is something special about Paula Cole’s music, artistry and particularly her live performances. Indeed, being a 7-time Grammy nominee, winning one for Best Artist in 1998, and selling over 3 million albums is validation for her artistic talent. Putting icing on that cake and speaking volumes to how avid her fans are, is the fact that a Kickstarter was used to fund her 6th album, Raven…and she achieved 150% of her goal. In fact, Paula is a “feet on the ground” celebrity who is well-known for rubbing elbows with fans before and after shows.

If none of these aspects of Paula Cole’s career are on your radar, then perhaps you recall her single “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” which made it to the 8th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1997, or her song “I Don’t Want To Wait,” which was the theme song for the popular 1990s show, “Dawson’s Creek.”

Whether performing on her own, with her band, or with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton, or Melissa Etheridge, she is equally at home singing with her trademark piano or performing with one of many numerous instruments, like “…the Juno bass, tube Wurlitzer, harmonium, beat boxing vocals, toy xylophone, didjeridoo, clarinet, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Rhodes bass, Moog synthesizer, and low tuned-electric guitar…” Music is in her heart. It’s in her soul. It’s who she is.

Paula is equally at home whether singing behind the piano or one of over a dozen musical instruments she plays.

Paula Cole is coming full circle of sorts with her tour, returning to her home state of Massachusetts – she was born and raised in Rockport. She is an alumni of Boston’s Berklee College of Music with a background in Jazz, and currently is a professor there.

Her chosen venue is the acclaimed Narrows Center for the Arts, one of the South Coast’s premier musical venues and a favorite of visiting talent. Narrows Center for the Arts has built a solid reputation by showcasing world-class musical and visual-art talent for over a decade now. A premier concert venue located in the Battleship Cove area of Fall River, the Narrows features live music and art from the third floor of a century-old mill building, overlooking Narragansett Bay.
