OPINION: “How can kids feel safe in school if teachers aren’t drug tested?”

“I’ve sent emails and got no response from city council. I recently found out New Bedford teachers and staff, including nurses, are not drug tested.

I feel this is so unsafe for the children. Would you be able to ask who is okay with their children being taught by just anyone? Especially in New Bedford. I’d really like to make a change so all teachers are for children’s safety.

How can they feel safe in school? What if school is their only safe place?” -Anonymous

  1. I don’t think that’s a huge issue. It’s not like children think about what teachers do in their free time. Teachers have the right to a private life outside of school as long as it doesn’t interfere with their job.
Also some recreational drugs are legal so what if they test positive? What will be in place to protect them if the employer does not agree?

    • I agree with Kayla. I am a teacher and personally don’t mind being tested because I don’t use drugs; however, are doctors and nurses drug tested? They actually have access to drugs and are working in life or death situations.
I think unless there is an issue with a teacher’s performance and drugs are suspected it is a waste of money.
How about we drug test all parents and remove their children from them if they test positive? Society is placing more responsibility on the schools and relieving parents of it.
