Opening Day at Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens!

The event and all activities are open free to the public.

Join The Trustees of Reservations to celebrate our public opening of the Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens on October 26, 2014 from 11AM-3PM. The late Allen C. Haskell, a lifelong New Bedford resident and famed horticulturalist, assembled six acres in the heart of the city over more than 30 years, creating a truly unique and successful nursery. Here you will discover a stunning landscape with beautifully designed gardens and one of the oldest homes in New Bedford. The Trustees acquired the property in 2013 and are eager to welcome the public to this iconic reservation.

The festive celebration – fun for kids and adults! – will include:

  • Music by members of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and The Jethros
  • Food available from Plouf Plouf Gastronomie, Acacia Café Food Truck & Flours Girls Bakery
  • Guided Tours including, a “Path of the Child” tour, a Conservation in Action Tour, a Gene Bertrand Tour, and a Future of Allen C. Haskell Public Gardens Tour
  • Children’s activities including vintage lawn games, fort building in the Bamboo Cove, Louise Beech Art Station outside the farm house, and a tree identification Scavenger Hunt
  • A ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 11:30AM to recognize the contributions of staff, volunteers, stakeholders and donors. Trustees President & CEO Barbara Erickson, Southeast Regional Director John Vasconcellos, New Bedford Mayor Jonathan F. Mitchell, and the New Bedford City Council will be on hand for this special ceremony.

The event and all activities are open free to the public. We hope you will join us in celebrating the life of Allen C. Haskell and the opening of a new public garden space – located at 787 Shawmut Avenue, New Bedford – in the heart of the Whaling City.
