“Southcoast Hospitals Group, consisting of Charlton Memorial, St. Luke’s and Tobey, has earned global recognition on Newsweek’s list of World’s Best Hospitals 2023. The health system also received special recognition this year by performing “above average” for CMS infection prevention measures.

“I am so proud of our staff, both on the front lines and behind the scenes,” said Ray Kruger, MD, FACS, President and CEO of Southcoast Health. “It is an outstanding accomplishment to be named to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals. The fact that Southcoast has earned this prominent recognition consecutively since 2019 demonstrates our unwavering commitment to our community and providing exceptional care across the South Coast region.”

The World’s Best Hospitals list is compiled by Newsweek and the global data research firm Statista Inc. as a resource to help patients make informed decisions when choosing the right hospital for their care. This list additionally serves as a benchmark for hospitals, indicating their relative performance in comparison to both national and international peers.

To evaluate each hospital’s performance, Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Four data sources were used for the evaluation including hospital recommendations from medical experts, patient experience, patient-reported outcome measures and hospital quality metrics. “Earning this recognition shows the exceptional teamwork our providers, nurses, and staff demonstrate every day,” said Tonya Johnson, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, SVP & COO Southcoast Hospitals Group. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible, and for continuously putting our patients first.”

This year, over 2,300 hospitals were ranked from over 28 countries, with just 414 hospitals from the United States earning a spot on the list. Just 17 hospitals from Massachusetts and Rhode Island earned a spot on the list, and Southcoast Health was one of 12 hospitals in the region to be recognized for excellence in Infection Prevention.

“In addition to being mentioned on the list, I am incredibly proud we received special recognition for our performance in infection prevention,” said Dani Hackner, MD, MBA, Chief Clinical Officer for Southcoast Health. “The pandemic emphasized the opportunity for us to evaluate and improve on all of our infection prevention processes to ensure we are keeping our patients, providers, and staff as safe and healthy as possible. Thank you to all our staff members for their continued dedication.”
