New Items Accepted in Dartmouth Recycling Carts

Residents can now place a few new items in their gray and black recycling carts.

In the cart with the gray lid, residents can recycle empty box containers and empty aerosol cans. Box containers, a relatively new form of packaging, are used to contain soy milk and soup. They also include kids’ juice boxes (please remove the straw). These boxes make food or beverages shelf-stable, so they can be displayed on a shelf and not in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. Please rinse the empty box before recycling. Discard plastic caps (the plastic flip tops may
remain). Empty aerosol cans may also be placed in the cart with the gray lid along with other cans, bottles, jugs, and jars. The plastic cap must be removed.

Empty paperboard cartons can now be recycled in the cart with the black lid along with other paper and cardboard. These cartons contain milk, orange juice, and soy milk and can be found in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. Before recycling, please rinse empty cartons and discard the plastic cap.

“These new additions to the recycling program will help residents recycle more,” said David Hickox, Dartmouth’s Director of Public Works. “By keeping these materials out of the orange bags, residents will save money and we can extend the life of the Crapo Hill Landfill, the disposal site for Dartmouth’s trash.”
