New Bedford’s Zeiterion Performing Arts Center rings in the new year with seven spectacular performances and events

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center starts 2020 with a slate of shows that will delight fans of music, dance, comedy, movies and more. The month begins with a screening of Waiting to Exhale starring Whitney Houston on January 6 and wraps with Subject:Matter for a night of live music and cutting-edge tap dance at Stage Door Live on January 30. Movie Monday: Waiting to Exhale

Tickets: $3

Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett star in this funny and touching film about four women who find strength through their rare and special friendship. Savannah, Bernadine, Robin and Gloria are all searching for The Real Thing: true love. Based on Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel and featuring the smash hit “Exhale (Shoop Shoop).”

New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents All John Williams
Saturday, January 11, 7:30 p.m.

For over 60 years, legendary composer John Williams has been writing unforgettable music for films such as Star Wars, E.T., Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and many more. Yaniv Dinur and the NBSO celebrate one of the great film composers of our time with this iconic music that has touched the lives of people of all ages.

The Second City: The Best of Second City

Since making its dynamic debut in 1959, it has become an epic launchpad for comedy superstars. They’re bringing “The Best of The Second City” to New Bedford for a raucous evening of comedy classics, newly minted material, and that famous Chicago-style improv. This must-see show features the best sketches and songs from The Second City’s history made famous by superstar Second City alums like Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray and more.

We Shall Overcome A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring Damien Sneed

Damien Sneed, the accomplished vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and Carnegie Hall veteran, brings a soul-stirring tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr! We Shall Overcome is inspired by the words and actions of Dr. King, showcasing repertoire from across the African American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders interwoven with spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches. The production ties together a living lineage of music and culture with traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway and spirituals.

Gather on the historic Zeiterion stage in a café setting to enjoy the world of dance! This free event features guest speaker Adrienne Hawkins, and it enhances the experience of the mainstage performance Philadanco on February 7.

Get The Led Out

Dubbed “The American Led Zeppelin,” Get The Led Out captures the essence of Zeppelin and returns it to stage. The two-hour rock homage features an impressive group of musicians who were fans first, striving to do justice to one of the greatest bands in rock history. They bring just what the audience wants: a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity!

Subject: Matter at Stage Door Live

Choreographer Ian Berg brings his Boston-based company for a night of live music and cutting-edge tap dance work to examine the intersection of tap and jazz! Berg has been dancing since an early age and has training and performance experience in tap dance, ballet, modern dance, jazz, contact improvisation, and a variety of other styles and approaches. Stage Door Live transforms the historic Zeiterion stage into an intimate concert club. Reserved seats at premium tables are available and remaining tables are general admission. Full bar available.
