The New Bedford-Fairhaven Route 6 Swing Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from Friday January 8, 2016 at 8:00 PM until Monday January 11, 2016 at 5:00 AM. The bridge closure is necessary to perform permanent repairs to mechanical components which failed and were temporarily repaired in July. In order to gain access to the repair area, the bridge is required to be in the fully open position (open for boat traffic, closed for vehicles) due to the area being obstructed by machinery components in the closed position. A traffic detour with signs and message boards will be installed to notify and direct traffic around the bridge closure.

Access to local businesses will be maintained during all times of the bridge closure.

MassDOT advises motorists to seek alternate routes during these times. The schedule for this work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.

  1. I have lived in Fairhaven for almost 16 years and in that time frame there has always been either repairs or closures for repairs or notification signs not operating whether near the bridge or on rt 18 and 195 ( which was actually gone for least couple years ) so when is it ever gonna be ” done ” and all lanes open? This gets very fustrating when that bridge is your best route home

    Thank you for your time

    • @Jim The Pope’s Island Bridge needed to be replaced even 20 years ago! Though I love it for the icon that it is, it’s time to scrap it and move forward with a more efficient replacement.
