The community is invited to join the Old Dartmouth Historical Society Board of Trustees and Capital Campaign Co-Chairs George B. Mock, III, and Donald S. Rice, on Monday, May 19, at 4 p.m. for the official Ground Breaking Ceremony for the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s new Education Center and Research Library.

The 4 p.m. ceremony will take place on the site of the new building, located on the South side of the Museum on North Water Street. A public reception will follow in the Jacobs Family Gallery.

The construction of the new Education Center and Research Library is the most ambitious building project at the Museum since the construction of the Historic Bourne Building in 1916.The four-floor, 17,000 square foot building will connect to the existing Museum campus and be constructed on a site left vacant since the devastating gas explosion of 1977.

The building will house new classrooms, a Digital Reading Room, climate controlled storage vaults for collections, a laboratory for the flagship Apprenticeship Program, and a fourth floor multi-use assembly space with majestic views of New Bedford Harbor.

The new center will not only allow the Museum to meet its dramatically expanding programming need and consolidate its holdings onto one campus, but will also bring great and lasting benefits to the region. We hope you can join us for this momentous occasion.
