UPDATED: New Bedford Public Schools Supt. Anderson looking to move on to same position in Newton

On Friday morning, the Newton School Committee announced that they have chosen Natick Superintendent Dr. Anna Nolan to be their next superintendent, feeling that Nolan would be a better fit for Newton’s characteristics as a school district.

Hired by New Bedford Public Schools in 2018, he re-signed his contract in 2020 which extends through 2026.

On February 4, 2023, the appointed Newton Superintendent Search Committee interviewed seven candidates who had been selected from an initial screening process conducted in late January, for a permanent superintendent for the Newton Public School district.

After thorough discussion and review, the search committee voted to recommend three candidates for further consideration: Peter Light, Superintendent, of Acton-Boxborough Regional School District, Anna Nolin, Superintendent, of Natick Public Schools, and New Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Anderson.

Anderson was named Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools on July 1, 2018 and currently oversees the operation of 25 schools with an enrollment of 13,000 students, and a $215M budget. Prior to joining New Bedford, he served as the superintendent of the Randolph, MA School District and in Washington D.C. as an Assistant Superintendent. He serves as co-chair of the Urban Superintendents’ Association and as an active member of the legislative committee for the Massachusetts School Superintendents’ Association.

All three candidates will have follow-up interviews and Superintendent Anderson’s interview is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2023.

The Newton superintendent search process, which has been led by a search committee composed of parents, educators, administrators, community members, administrators and School Committee members, has been ongoing since the fall.
