New Bedford residents can donate to Maria, Irma relief efforts

New Bedford residents interested in contributing to hurricane relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands, can make cash donations to relief agencies, with links available at the city’s website, newbedford-ma.gov.

Many city residents have contacted city government to inquire about ways to provide aid to those affected by Maria, as well as Hurricane Irma. While organizations in Massachusetts are collecting donations of tangible items, cash donations are effective and timely for the relief agencies in the field.

Mayor Jon Mitchell and the members of the New Bedford City Council suggest those interested in contributing to relief funds to consider the American Red Cross and the United for Puerto Rico (Unidos por Puerto Rico) Fund.

To donate to the American Red Cross, visit redcross.org/donate/donation or call 1-800-HELP NOW (1-800-435-7669). The opportunity to donate to those affected by Hurricane Irma is also available on the Red Cross donation site.
