The City of New Bedford’s Planning Department seeks public feedback for its Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) study’s survey.

The Planning Department’s TOD study will evaluate existing and future conditions around the proposed MBTA Commuter Rail platforms in North New Bedford (Church Street) and New Bedford (Whale’s Tooth), due to come online in 2023. The study will span the next year and a half.

Transit-Oriented Development, or TOD, is a type of community development that includes a mixture of housing, office, retail and other amenities integrated into a walkable neighborhood, and located within a half-mile of quality public transportation.

There are three core components of the NBTOD study:

1. First, the project team will evaluate the existing conditions of each study area using the best available data.
2. Second, the project team will engage the public to gather feedback and opinions on existing conditions and desired future development. The public engagement process will include public meetings, as well as an online survey available in English, Spanish and Portuguese – launching today. The survey can be accessed online at http://www.srpedd.org/New-Bedford-TOD-Study.
3. Finally, the team will evaluate existing zoning, and develop potential zoning scenarios that pair public input with the city’s vision for each study area.

New Bedford residents are encouraged to participate in the study by taking the NBTOD study survey on the project page and/or attending an upcoming public meeting.

The Department of City Planning will hold an Open House meeting from at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2019 at the New Bedford Main Library 3rd Floor Meeting Room, 613 Pleasant St, New Bedford, MA 02740.

Outreach materials and information are available online at: http://www.srpedd.org/New-Bedford-TOD-Study.

Residents can also visit the New Bedford Planning Department’s Facebook page for information, announcements and project updates: https://www.facebook.com/NBcityplanning/
