The New Bedford Police Department welcomed two new officers Monday at a swearing-in ceremony for Jeremy Dellecese and Samuel Algarin-Mojica. Assistant City Clerk Stephanie Macomber administered the oath of office to the two young men at a ceremony at City Hall.
Officer Dellecese joined the New Bedford Police Department as a cadet shortly after graduating from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School. Officer Algarin-Mojica served in the Army reserves and also was employed as a parent contact worker and translator for the New Bedford school department.
“These are two young men who have proven very clearly their commitment to public service,’’ Mayor Jon Mitchell said at the ceremony.
He described the two new officers, along with their new colleagues at the department, as “people who put New Bedford first. That’s what we’re all about here.’’
The mayor spoke of his pride in the New Bedford Police Department, which is highly respected not only among the city’s residents but also in the state and nation. “We have a really good police department in every respect,’’ the mayor said.
Mayor Mitchell thanked their families for their support, which he said will be essential as the new officers take on their role as police officers. “There will be moments of stress and frustration and disappointment,’’ the mayor said. “These two gentlemen are willing to take on that on behalf of all of us.’’
Chief Joseph Cordeiro praised the newest officers in a department that is also a special family. “We welcome you to this wonderful family,’’ he said. “We’re happy and proud to have you among us.’’
The chief praised the two young men’s families for raising them with strong values that they will rely upon in their work as New Bedford police officers. “Treat people like you were raised,’’ he advised them. “Treat them with kindness and compassion and honesty. Treat them like that and you won’t go wrong.’’
“The badge you carry is heavy with the burden of responsibility and excellence,’’ the chief told his newest officers. “It’s a badge that many wish to hold but few get to do so.’’
Police chaplain Rev. David Lima prayed for the new officers and their families. “You are going to make an oath, I’m here to serve, I’m here to protect, to make the city not only safe but better in every way,’’ Rev. Lima said. “Every day, let it be a good day and come home safe.’’
Lt. Ricard Rezendes, the department’s director of training, and City Councilors Linda Morad and Steven Martins also attended the ceremony, alongside the new officers’ proud family members.
