“Another man was charged after he was found to be operating an unregistered dirt bike.

On Friday, June 24, officers were patrolling E. Rodney French Boulevard in the area of Hudson Street when they observed a dirt bike operating at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of the road.

Officers pursued the dirt bike until the driver, identified as James Luis Berrios-Alvarez, 21, of 650 Cottage Street #1, lost control of the bike and drove up onto the grass in front of a home on Rodney Street.

After a brief investigation, officers learned that the bike had illegally attached plates, was unregistered, and was uninsured.

Berrios Alvarez was arrested and charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle on a public way, and exceeding the posted speed limit.

The investigating officer was Ofc. Brian Crosby.

At the beginning of June, the New Bedford Police Department announced Operation Safe Streets, an initiative to crack down on illegal recreational vehicle use. Any information on where the vehicles are being stored or the identities of those illegally street riding can call our anonymous tip line at (508) 99-CRIME or call our Detective Division at (508) 991-6300 Ext. 79519.” -City of New Bedford Police Department.
