New Bedford Police Department arrest two for for firearm possession after chase

Detectives assigned to the Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau have arrested two men with guns after a brief foot chase.

On November 30th, detectives were monitoring activity in the south-end sector when Det. Sgt. Andrew Simmons observed two males enter into the yard of an abandoned property on Purchase St. and behaving suspiciously.

As detectives approached, the males fled from the scene. After a brief pursuit, one suspect was stopped and found to be in possession of a 40 caliber Glock handgun loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition. The male was identified as SIDNEY PIRES-FONSECA, 18, of 56 Thompson St.

The second suspect continued running and hopping fences of nearby yards. He was ultimately stopped and found to have been in possession of a Poly 80 9mm handgun loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition. The male was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile. Both suspects were taken into custody and charged with carrying firearms loaded with ammunition contained within high-capacity magazines without license, as well as trespassing.
