New Bedford Police took 66 grams of fentanyl off the streets Tuesday with the arrest of a Rhode Island man on charges of trafficking in fentanyl.
Members of the New Bedford Police Department narcotics unit stopped a vehicle in the area of Allen Street and Rockdale Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. after receiving information that the driver was dealing fentanyl in the city.
A search of the vehicle revealed a hidden compartment containing 66 grams of fentanyl. Christian Castellano, 21, of 465 Elmwood Ave. Apt. 6A, Providence, Rhode Island, was charged with trafficking in fentanyl (over 36 grams) and trafficking in a class B substance near a park (Buttonwood Park.)
Police also located $180 in the hidden compartment. The street value of the drugs was estimated at about $6,600. Det. Jonathan Lagoa was the lead investigator.
Fentanyl is a potent, synthetic opioid pain medication and is estimated to have about 80 times the potency of morphine.
