New Bedford Police arrest 35-year old man with gun following confrontation

“New Bedford Police patrol officers have seized a stolen firearm from a male who reportedly threatened to shoot someone.

On June 17th at around 7:30 PM, north-end units responded to a residence on Illinois St. regarding a male with a gun. Upon arrival, the suspect was seen entering a nearby vehicle and was stopped by officers Hank Turgeon and Alan Lord. He was identified as Mr. JARRED CHUMACK, 35, of New Bedford. It was reported that CHUMACK had made his way to the residence to confront a male regarding a fight that had occurred the night before in Freetown. While at the home, he displayed a firearm in his waistband and threatened to shoot the man before police were called.

The officers searched CHUMACK’s vehicle and located a 9mm handgun loaded with seven rounds of ammunition beneath the driver’s seat. He does not possess a license to carry.

CHUMACK was taken into custody and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, threats, and carrying a firearm without a license among other charges. CHUMACK already has several charges open in New Bedford District Court stemming from an incident in May during which he was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and found to be in possession of two rounds of ammunition.

If you have any information concerning the possession or use of illegal firearms, the NBPD wants to hear from you. Anonymous information can be provided at 508-99-CRIME or our website, www.newbedfordpd.com.”-New Bedford Police Department.
