Students at New Bedford schools will start their day Friday, Sept. 15 with a special greeting from members of the New Bedford Police Department: A high five.

For the second school year, the New Bedford Police Department is participating in High Five Friday, an initiative supported by many police and school departments across the state. On High Five Friday, police officers greet students entering the school building to start their days with high fives and wishes for a great day in school.

The program aims to strengthen the bonds between students and police. Last year’s rollout of the program in New Bedford received positive reviews from the students and teachers, as well as from the officers who participated.

Schools participating in this week’s High Five Friday include Taylor, Congdon, Carney Academy, Hathaway, Rodman, Carter Brooks, Lincoln, Ashley, Swift, Hannigan, DeValles, Winslow, Pacheco, Campbell and Pulaski. Officers will be at all of these schools at 8 a.m., with the exception of Pulaski, which starts about a half hour later.

We encourage the media to cover this fun and uplifting event.
