City of New Bedford mourns passing of former City Councilor, city’s first female acting mayor, Cynthia Kruger

“I was saddened to learn of the passing of Cynthia Kruger, who served the people of New Bedford as the Ward 3 city councilor for sixteen years, and as acting Mayor from December of 1982 to January of 1983 – the first woman to serve in that capacity.

She was a professor of education at UMass Dartmouth for more than forty years, a staunch advocate for public education, and an active parishioner at St. Lawrence Church. Cynthia deeply loved New Bedford, and in her decades of service, always gave the City her best. In honor of that service, I have ordered flags at all City buildings be lowered to half-staff.”-Mayor Jon Mitchell.
