New Bedford man in critical condition after being struck by vehicle on County Street

A 57-year-old New Bedford man was critically injured Monday evening when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross County Street near the intersection of Madison Street.

Benjamin D. Shurtleff, 57, of New Bedford, was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was then transported by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital. He was listed in critical condition in the trauma intensive care unit as of early Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the victim stopped and was cooperative with police. The driver told police he was heading north on County Street with his headlights on and did not see the victim until he struck him.

The accident remains under investigation.
