New Bedford man arrested with loaded gun while on probation for armed robbery faces dangerousness hearing

Thanks to good investigative work, the New Bedford Police gang unit arrested a suspect in possession of an illegal handgun while he was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet related to a separate armed robbery case in Plymouth.

Police arrested Javon Gamboa Leao, 18, of 56 Yale St., New Bedford, on charges of possession of a firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, improper storage of a firearm, unlawful possession of a large capacity weapon and possession of Xanax.

Detectives located Leao seated in a vehicle near Harborview Towers, 280 Acushnet Ave.

A search of the vehicle revealed one revolver with ammunition in the cylinder and no lock to secure it, a 15-round magazine for 9 mm ammunition and a box of .22 caliber ammunition. He was also found with Xanax.

When he was arrested, Leao was on pre-trial probation for another crime, an armed robbery in Plymouth. As part of his pre-trial probation conditions, he was ordered to wear an ankle monitoring bracelet.

Leao was arrested at 12:04 p.m. Sunday, July 29. His bail was revoked and he is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Friday, Aug. 3.
