Police are searching for suspects who assaulted a 25-year-old New Bedford man with a beer bottle Sunday after he attempted to protect his father from five people who tried to rob him.

The man’s father, a 41-year-old New Bedford man, was leaving Jalice Café, 1468 Acushnet Ave., at about 8:52 p.m. Sunday when he was approached by four men and a woman who asked him for money.

When the victim refused, the group followed him home. At the house, the man’s son exited the home to protect his father. One of the suspects broke a beer bottle over the son’s arm. He then used the broken pieces to cut his arm.

The suspects then fled in an unknown direction. The victim described two of the men as Cape Verdean and the other two men as Puerto Rican.

The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital.

Detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to call the tip line at 508-992-7463 or e-mail tip@newbedfordpd.com.
