New Bedford Homicide Victim Identified

Update on an earlier article.The victim of an apparent homicide in New Bedford can now be publicly identified as Robert Jones III. The victim is a 41-year-old homeless man, who appears to have been living in a homeless encampment in the woods of off Nauset Street.

New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police investigators assigned to this office and Homicide Unit Prosecutors are actively investigating an apparent homicide, which occurred in the City of New Bedford.

Investigators were led to the victim’s body, which was located in a heavily wooded area adjacent to 47 Nauset Street, early yesterday evening by two other homeless men who reported the death to police. The deceased is the apparent victim of a stabbing.

With the assistance of the New Bedford Fire Department, the deceased’s body was removed from the heavily vegetated area between 8 and 9 pm yesterday, and is now in the custody of the state Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death will be conducted.

The investigation into the apparent homicide is being coordinated by First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg.

The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing and no further information can be disseminated.
