New Bedford High School women’s basketball team raising money to play in Florida this December

“Now that we’ve gotten the approval for our Florida trip and have submitted all the paperwork, comes the fun part: fundraising!!! You can help us by visiting out page here,

Over the course of the next few months, we will have a wide range of fundraisers including ‘Dinner night at Top Shelf restaurant,” car washes, a pampered chef virtual catalog party, a golf tournament, and a spaghetti dinner. We’ve also set up this page for people who would like to contribute in another fashion and on behalf of the girls.

I thank you all in advance for any contribution you can make and any involvement you can have in any of these upcoming fundraisers. These girls are the definition of a Student-Athlete and this trip is well deserved! Go Whalers!!! ”

A student-athlete is a participant in an organized competitive sport sponsored by the educational institution in which the student is enrolled.

These 11 girls (soon to be 5 seniors, 5 juniors, and 1 sophomore) are the epitome of a Student-Athlete! As a coach, you want kids that are coachable, academically sound, model students in the building and community, and have a will to win and improve in all facets of life. Let me tell you a little about this group.

Academically, they have excelled above and beyond in the classroom:

• As a team, they have a current cumulative GPA of a 3.4.
• 5 of the 11 girls on this team are currently enrolled in the Academy of Honors
• 2 Members of this team have a 4.0 GPA and are tied for 1st in the class of 2023

Athletically, these girls are as talented and gifted as they come:

• 9 of the 11 girls play 2 or 3 sports
• Many of them have received individual recognition including, but not limited to, SEC-All Star, Standard-Times All-Star, Pre-Season Boston Globe Recognition.

During a shortened season (Due to Covid) these 11 girls showed up every day, following every new protocol put in place, and had two goals in mind; to get better every day, and compete for an SEC Championship. Both goals were achieved, however, we fell just short in the championship game. With nothing to hang their heads about, all 11 girls will return next season with bigger goals!

As a coach, you try to think of ways to repay a group that remains dedicated and buys into a program. We’ve had many team bonding experiences including bowling and pancake breakfasts but we’ve been thinking of something special to do for them.

I tell everyone, This is a SPECIAL group. This group deserves something SPECIAL for all they do, not just on the basketball court, but the way they represent their families, school, and community.

This is why we would like to take this group down to Orlando, Florida to compete in the KSA Tournament this December 26th-30th. We will have the privilege of playing three games against teams from all across the country. Included in this trip, the girls will be able to visit Universal Studios and Disney. Not many kids get to experience such a trip, never mind with some of their closest friends and teammates.

Unfortunately, when Covid hit we were forced to halt the planning process and more importantly the fundraising portion of the trip. With recent approval, we are now ramping up our fundraising in hopes of raising enough funds to offset the cost for these girls. We would be extremely grateful if you would be willing to support a great cause and a great group of kids. These 11 girls will remember this trip for a very long time and will be very thankful for any help you may be willing and able to give.

All proceeds raised from this fundraiser will go directly towards to the cost of each girl’s trip.

On behalf of the ENTIRE NBHS Girls Basketball program, I thank you in advance for your donation and contribution to helping ensure these girls can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!!

GO WHALERS!!!!!”-Jordan Pina.
