The Lewis Temple Academy of Honors (LTAOH) at New Bedford High School is being established to provide qualifying scholars with the opportunity to participate in a sequence of advanced courses that will prepare them for application to the finest undergraduate institutes and most competitive post-secondary programs. The Academy is an exam-based program with an application process that includes a review of student grades, conduct and attendance information as well as submission of a student essay.
Of the focused curriculum, Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin noted, “This new Academy within New Bedford High School underscores ongoing efforts to make New Bedford the school district of choice, and New Bedford High School a leader among the region’s comprehensive high schools for students and parents seeking increased leverage in applying for admission to colleges which are competitive and on the look-out for our graduates.”
“This program demonstrates New Bedford High School’s continued commitment to academic excellence. The Lewis Temple Academy of Honors will provide students with a team of professionals geared to assisting students in successfully navigating honors and advanced placement courses during their four years at New Bedford High,” said Headmaster Bernadette Coelho.
The deadline to apply for admission to LTAOH has been extended to July 14, 2017. Completed applications can be mailed “Attention: Joyce Paulo, New Bedford High School, 230 Hathaway Road, New Bedford, MA 02740.”
The course of studies in the Lewis Temple Academy of Honors will support students in developing research, writing, persuasive discourse, collaboration, and communication skills. Academy students will be supported by their teachers, LTAOH guidance counselor, and peers. A staff of exceptional educators, AP certified by the College Board, will focus on accelerated learning in the 16 AP courses being offered. The LTAOH course of study culminates with the awarding of a coveted AP Capstone Diploma.
The accelerated course of study offered through the LTAOH allows for students to take classes at UMass Dartmouth and/or Bristol Community College as high school students, earning college credits. Students may complete up to one whole year of college while still in high school at no cost.
Students who commit to the LTAOH are afforded the opportunity to save thousands of dollars by completing college level courses by scoring a 3 or higher on the exams to receive college level credit while in high school.
