New Bedford firefighters rescue woman and boy with ladder apartment during fire

At approximately 3:00pm this afternoon the New Bedford Fire Department responded to 269 Tinkham Street for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, Incident Commander District Chief David Cooper reported a fire in the second floor apartment of this three family dwelling.

District Chief Brian Medeiros reported one female adult and a male child yelling for help from a second floor rear window requiring rescue. Crews of Ladder 4 and Engine 9 were able to raise a ground ladder and rescued both occupants. The child and adult were initially transported to St. Luke’s Emergency Department by NBEMS. The male child was subsequently transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the adult female was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Investigation Unit. Emergency Management and the American Red Cross are assisting for adults and three children who are currently displaced. No firefighter injuries were reported.
