“At 0047 hrs yesterday morning, 911 calls were received for a structure fire at 34 Sidney Street.
This three family was well involved in fire upon arrival. New Bedford Police Officers evacuated the six adults and infant prior to the arrival of fire apparatus.
We were able to protect the exposure buildings on either side as well as contain the fire to the third floor and attic. The remainder of the residence sustained smoke and water damage. Damage is estimated at $100,000. The fire was under control within an hour but fire crews remained on scene checking for extension and assisting displaced tenants retreiving belongings.
Six adults and an infant were displaced and being assisted by the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire was discarded smoking material on the third-floor porch. Windy conditions contributed to the rapid extension of the fire.
No civilians or firefighters were injured however four New Bedford Police Officers were treated at St Luke’s Hospital for smoke inhalation and released. Two cats and a dog were also rescued. One cat remains missing.
This fire should serve as a reminder of the consequences of not properly disposing of smoking material.” -New Bedford Fire Department.
