New Bedford Fire Department promotes Robert Mourao to permanent District Fire Chief

“The New Bedford Fire Department is proud to announce the promotion of Acting District Chief Robert Mourao to permanent District Fire Chief. The City Council confirmed his appointment and he was sworn in by City Clerk Dennis Farias. District Chief Mourao’s wife, Lynn, was on hand to pin his new badge.

District Chief Mourao joined the NBFD in 1996. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2004 and Captain in 2012. As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to the Fire Prevention Bureau for several years and as a Captain, he was also in charge of the Training Division.

District Chief Mourao has a Bachelors Degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and an Associates Degree in Fire Scoence from Columbia Southern University. He has a strong background in building construction from his family’s construction business where he held a Construction Supervisors License. Understanding the dynamics of building construction plays a key role for Incident Commanders in determining fireground strategy and tactics.
