“Yesterday afternoon at 1:23pm the New Bedford Fire Department responded to Norpel at 4 Fish Island for an automatic fire alarm activation.

While Engine 1 and Ladder 1 were investigated an activated pull station, they discovered an odor of anhydrous ammonia. Crews conducted a search of the building and confirmed all workers had evacuated and a Tier 2 response was requested from the Massachusetts State Hazmat Team.

Hazmat technicians entered the building and located the source of the leak. A worker had smelled ammonia and activated a pull station. NBEMS also assisted at the scene. No workers or responders were injured.

Crews remained on scene until the building was safe to enter.” -New Bedford Fire Department.
