“At approximately 12:30am this morning, 911 calls were received reporting a structure fire in a three-family dwelling located at 64 Madeira Avenue.

Command Unit 1, District Chief Daniel Coons, reported a well involved fire on the first floor along with two adult occupants of the third floor apartment on a flat roof section of the third floor requiring rescue. Engine 8 performed a transitional attack, forced entry, and began an interior fire attack.

The crew of Ladder 4 consisting of Lt. Keenan Martin, FF Nacean Purnell, FF Darien Jacintho, and FF Steven Correia raised a 35’ ground ladder, ascended the ladder, and assisted the two occupants down to safety. They were evaluated and treated at the scene by NBEMS paramedics and did not require transport to the hospital.

The tenants were made aware of the fire due to a properly functioning fire alarm system. The cause of the fire was investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit and was determined to be smoking material in the first floor apartment.

No firefighters were injured. The American Red Cross is assisting the five displaced adult tenants.” -New Bedford Fire Department.
