New Bedford Fire Department respond to fire alarm, smoke, at three family tenement

“At 1115 hrs. yesterday morning 911 calls were received reporting a fire alarm activation and an odor of smoke at 11 Roosevelt Street. This residence is a three story, wood frame, three family dwelling.

Crews from Engine 6 & Ladder 3 made entry and encountered a heavy smoke condition and fire in the floor and ceiling between the first and second floors with vertical extension. The fire was extinguished with the aid of two hoselines.

Thirteen residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire remains under investigation by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit. A cat, guinea pig, and ferret were rescued from the third floor apartment. NBPD and NBEMS assisted on scene. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
