NBSO presents A Symphony of Villains & Heroes

On November 12, the NBSO 2016-2017 season continues with Villains & Heroes at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. David Amado takes the podium as the second music director finalist to appear with the NBSO. Amado is currently music director of both the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and is a prominent leader of the Delaware arts community. He has been praised by the media, audiences, and fellow musicians for his deep insight, visceral energy, and imaginative programming.

The concert opens with Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho Suite, from the infamous “shower scene” in the classic Hitchcock film. Herrmann’s violent string-screams remain one of the most enduring, and terrifying, moments in both music and the movies. Next on the program, award-winning Steinway Artist Diane Walsh joins the orchestra to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, highly charged music suffused with drama, poignancy, tenderness, and no shortage of pianistic virtuosity. The program closes with Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, an obsession-fueled tale of love, betrayal, murder, and (of course) witches. Featuring spectacular orchestration, riveting narrative, tolling bells, a guillotine, and a grotesque “Witches Sabbath,” Symphonie fantastique is an audience—and musician—favorite.
