On Saturday, April 9, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents Poulenc, Ravel & Tchaikovsky with guest artist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, whose career took off after a 2006 appearance with the NBSO. Bavouzet, a multi-award-winning French pianist, is considered one of the most engaging live performers of his generation. He will perform Maurice Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand, a composition showcasing the extraordinary and exclusive use of the left hand. Commissioned by the brilliant Austrian concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I, Ravel’s composition achieves astonishing full sound. Andrea Bavouzet, Jean-Efflam’s wife and an accomplished pianist herself, joins him in performing Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, a highly unusual concerto with a jazzy energy. The orchestra concludes the evening with one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved works, Symphony No. 5 in E Minor.
The concert will take place on April 9 at 7:30pm, at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford. Concert sponsor is the Sylvia Group. With only three concerts left in the centennial season, this is your final opportunity to subscribe to all three and save. Call the NBSO at 508-999-6276 for details.
