The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra centennial season continues with a performance of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah.

On Sunday, October 18, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra centennial season continues with a performance of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah, a joint production with members of the Sippican and Greater New Bedford Choral societies, and the Rhode Island College Concert choir, and featuring guest soloists soprano Noune Karapetian, mezzo-soprano Margaret Lias, tenor Matthew Anderson, and baritone Philip Lima.

Considered the equal of Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Creation, this masterful oratorio tells the dramatic story of the Biblical prophet Elijah. Mendelssohn was known for his symphonies and concertos, and this ambitious, vivid and gripping composition is one of his most familiar works and marks the climax of the young composer’s career.

Mendelssohn’s Elijah will take place on Sunday, October 18, 3:00pm, at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford. Tickets are $25‒$60, with $10 student tickets (not available online). Purchase tickets through the Z box office, 508-994-2900, or online at www.nbsymphony.org. Free and convenient concert parking is available in the Zeiterion garage. Please join us at 2:00pm in the Penler space (adjacent to The Z) for Dr. David MacKenzie’s pre-concert talk, free and open to the public.

The New Bedford Symphony celebrates its 100th anniversary this 2015-16 season! In 1915, New Bedford schoolteacher Clarence Arey founded a symphony orchestra to bring classical music to our region. Today, the NBSO is a superb professional orchestra that performs with internationally renowned guest artists, annually presenting a 7-concert series of classical and pops music and a 4-concert chamber music series, as well as providing nationally recognized educational programs for the children of South Coast.
