OPINION: NBHS teachers deserve praise for actions after school vandalized

Editor’s note: This is a letter submitted to us by a New Bedford Public School employee:

As a veteran New Bedford Public School Employee, I would like to recognize and applaud some of the exceptional staff members I witnessed caring for students on Friday, May 31, 2014 during the unexpected closing of New Bedford High School.

During the school’s untimely closure, several of our students’ parents could not be contacted, and the students were subsequently transferred to a neighboring school for supervision and assistance. Multiple staff members from the high school elected to voluntarily stay with the students, despite being told that they were free to leave. Many dedicated staff members remained with these students until every child was returned home safely. With so much negative press being directed towards New Bedford High School Teachers, I feel that we should all be enlightened in regards to the unrecognized commitment and dedication of our staff at New Bedford High School.
