New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and the New Bedford Department of Parks, Recreation and Beaches will host a National Get Outdoors Day event at Saturday, June 13, beginning at 11:00 AM. This is the eighth National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day), celebration which encourages healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and nontraditional types of outdoor activities. Primary goals of the day are to reach first-time visitors to public lands and to reconnect our youth to the great outdoors. This GO Day event will be held at Buttonwood Park from 11 am to 3 pm. Attendance is free to the public.

This event will include live music from Jerry Pinto, the President of Neighborhood United, an appearance from the New Bedford Bay Sox, and a climbing wall. Other activities will include a scavenger hunt, rowing demonstration, and a visit from some of the animals from the Buttonwood Park Zoo.

The pilot effort of National Get Outdoors Day was launched on June 14, 2008 and has grown every year. This event focuses attention on a single day when people have the opportunity to be inspired and motivated to get outdoors. Last year, over 171 official GO Day sites across the nation welcomed over 48,000 new faces to the joy and benefits of the great outdoors.

The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage. New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was established by Congress in 1996 to help preserve and interpret America’s nineteenth century whaling industry. The park, which encompasses a 13-block National Historic Landmark District, is the only National Park Service area addressing the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the economic, social, and environmental history of the United States. The National Park visitor center is located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. It is open seven days a week, from 9 AM-5 PM, and offers information, exhibits, and a free orientation movie every hour on the hour from 10 AM-3 PM. For more information, call the visitor center at 508-996-4095, go to www.nps.gov/nebe or visit the park’s Facebook page at facebook.com/NBWNHP. Everyone finds their park in a different way.
