Written by Nantucket native Frances Ruley Karttunen

Nantucket’s North Shore: A Neighborhood History is written by Nantucket native Frances Ruley Karttunen, a twelfth-generation descendant of Nantucket’s English settlers.

Beautifully illustrated with over 200 photographs from the archives of the Nantucket Historical Association and from local photographer Alan Reinhard, this large-format book tells the story of settlement on the island from Madaket in the west to the north side of the present Town of Nantucket. The author introduces us to colorful North Shore people, showing the houses where they lived, the roads traveled, farms cultivated, landmarks, monuments, ponds, businesses, beaches and more. Each chapter is interspersed with classic Nantucket recipes of yore, such as Sweet Flag Candy, Blueberry Grunt, and Nantucket Corn Pudding.
