Chief Joseph Perkins reports that Middleborough Police arrested two men after they allegedly fled from a vehicle during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.
Police seized approximately $10,000 worth of marijuana and marijuana edibles as a result of the arrests.
DUANE SILVA, AGE 43, OF NEW BEDFORD and DERECK HUNT, AGE 48, OF NEW BEDFORD are both charged with:
• Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class D Substance (Marijuana)
• Conspiracy to Violate the Drug Law
• Disorderly Conduct
• Resisting Arrest
SILVA is additionally charged with Trespassing on School Grounds.
Both men are being held on $5,040 bail and are expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in Wareham District Court.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., a Middleborough Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a suspended registration at the intersection of Center Street and Pearl Street.
The officer followed the vehicle as the driver turned onto multiple streets before hitting a parked car on Pearl Street at a low rate of speed. Three occupants of the vehicle, including SILVA and HUNT, then fled from the vehicle on foot.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Burkland Elementary School was placed in a brief lock down while the incident was still ongoing.
The Burkland School Resource Officer located SILVA in the parking lot of the school and placed him under arrest.
HUNT was located a short time later near the intersection of Mitchell Street and Woodland Avenue and placed under arrest.
The third suspect, a heavyset male, is still being sought by police.
Minor damage was done to the vehicles involved in the collision.
In searching the vehicle that the suspects fled from, officers located approximately 2.5 pounds of marijuana and 80 bags of marijuana edibles.
