The medical examiner’s office has accepted three separate cases reported to police Thursday.

Police responded early Thursday to the House of Hope, 848 Mt. Pleasant St., for reports of a 38-year-old man who was not breathing. Medics arrived on the scene at about 6:53 a.m. and reported that the man was deceased in his bed.

At about 7:40 p.m., police responded to reports of an unresponsive 36-year-old New Bedford woman in the 300 block of Orchard Street.

She was not breathing when police arrived. Emergency medical assistance was provided and she was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:38 p.m.

About an hour later, police responded to a possible overdose death Thursday night on the 100 block of Clark Street.

The victim, a 47-year-old New Bedford man, was found on the bathroom floor at about 8:35 p.m. Evidence of drug use was found near him.

New Bedford police detectives are investigating.

  1. Regarding the person who passed away at House of Hope. This man was a United States Marine combat vet. He was clean 6 years. He came to us from a nursing home because he wanted to spend the last days of his life with people that he loved and with people that loved him. He had extensive medical issues and was terminally ill. He was checked on hourly, was checked on at 4:00 am, had labored breathing at 5:00 am when EMT’s were called, and passed away peacefully in his sleep of natural causes. Do not disrespect him, his recovery, or his family by suggesting anything else.

    • Bob, the article specifically states:

“Police responded early Thursday to the House of Hope, 848 Mt. Pleasant St., for reports of a 38-year-old man who was not breathing. Medics arrived on the scene at about 6:53 a.m. and reported that the man was deceased in his bed.”

By all means, please explain what is being suggested here and how it is disrespectful in any way, shape or form? In addition, this is not a subjective piece that we created but is word for word the New Bedford Police Department’s press release – without change.

Perhaps you should actually read the article before fabricating an offense.

      • thank you. i did not mean to imply that the report was an issue but if you read a comment made by one of the readers it states that the deceased had od’ed. that was untrue. the reader was connecting another death in the article that stated that drugs were found on the scene with this one. my response was in relation to that comment. the article is clear. two different scenes. there were no drugs found nor were there any involved with the death at 848 mt pleasant. the drugs were related to another scene mentioned in the article.

        • Bob, it is easy for people to make assumptions, but it still does not make it right. I am actually relieved to hear that the person who passed at the House of Hope did not die of a drug overdose. It is unfortunate that his health was such that he was had to die. The struggle with addiction is a hard one. I happen to know the person who od’ed in the other instance. He was a good man who was struggling. I feared that it was eventually going to happen. I prayed it wouldn’t and he would have been able to fight it. The only solace is that my friend is no longer struggling with his demons. He is now at rest. I know his family and friends are going to miss him.
