“I was saddened to learn of the passing of Ruby Dottin, the first woman of color to serve on the New Bedford School Committee.

More than anything else, Ruby’s public service was driven by a deep commitment to widening the doors of opportunity for the City’s school children. She will be remembered most for her own distinguished career as an educator, her trailblazing in the City’s political life, and her dedication to the proposition that all children are capable of learning. I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family. She will be missed, but her legacy shall shine brightly.

I have ordered the flags at City buildings be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, November 24 and Wednesday, November 25 in honor of her service to the people of New Bedford.”
