Mayor: Senior Centers throughout the city will expand their hours

The New Bedford Council on Aging will host a series of open house events during the month of September at several New Bedford Senior Centers to present a full program of activities during the fall months as well as to highlight expanded hours of operation. The open house events will be held at the Buttonwood, Hazelwood and Brooklawn Senior Centers.

In May, Mayor Jon Mitchell included additional funding for senior centers in his budget proposal to the City Council. The Council approved the Mayor’s request which allowed the Council on Aging to offer expanded hours of operation and better serve New Bedford seniors. The Buttonwood Center is open two extra hours a day Monday through Friday. Hazelwood and Brooklawn Centers have extended hours two days a week to remain open until 4:00 pm instead of closing in the mid afternoon. The Ashley Center is now open until 4:00 pm. Seniors are encouraged to come and explore the new program offerings including expanded bingo, yoga, healthy cooking lessons, group discussions and more.

The Open House at the Buttonwood Senior Center will be held on Friday, September 6th from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a “Sock Hop Lunch” with burgers and old-fashioned Lime Rickey’s sponsored by Coastline Elderly Services. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. through 12:15 p.m. The Buttonwood Senior Center is now open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The Open House at the Hazelwood Senior Center will be held on Tuesday, September 10th from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a delicious lunch sponsored by The Oaks followed by entertainment and dancing with Victor Fonseca. The Hazelwood Senior Center’s expanded hours include Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and on Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The Open House at the Brooklawn Senior Center will be held on Thursday, September 12th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. This event will feature refreshments and entertainment by “New Horizons.” The Brooklawn Senior Center will now be open to the public Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
