This morning at about 2:10 a.m., State Police from the Dartmouth Barracks responded to a two vehicle crash on Route 195 westbound in Swansea that resulted in a fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Joshua Pacheco indicates a 2012 Volkswagen Touareg was traveling eastbound on Route 195 when, for reason still under investigation, the operator, a 40-year-old female from Bristol, RI, lost control of her vehicle, crossed the median into the westbound travel lanes and struck a vehicle which was traveling westbound. That vehicle, a 2003 Jeep Liberty, rolled over and became fully engulfed with the operator trapped inside. The 38-year-old man from Cranston, R.I. was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.

The operator of the Touareg was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, Troopers assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

State Police were assisted on scene by Swansea Police, Swansea Fire and EMS, and MassDOT.

The westbound travels lanes of Route 195 were closed for approximately 4 hours to accommodate the investigation. Westbound traffic was temporarily diverted to Route 6.
