“This month, the Massachusetts State Police are teaming up with agencies across New England including the Connecticut State Police and Enfield Police Department, to enforce the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

As part of this effort, a special Border 2 Border (B2B) enforcement initiative will take place for the remainder of May and through the summer. Troopers will join forces with other law enforcement agencies to provide increased seat belt enforcement, especially for vehicles crossing the border into Massachusetts.

During a crash, the seat belt will hold the occupant in the seat and almost always prevents ejection from the vehicle. The belt will spread the forces experienced during a crash over the body in a way to minimize injury when worn properly. During a crash the seat belt allows the body to slow down, rather than colliding with the hard vehicle interior, decreasing the chance of internal injuries to the brain, spinal cord, and vital organs.

Among drivers and front-seat passengers, safety belts reduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of serious injury by 50%. Similar statistics have been compiled for passengers in the rear of a vehicle. Additionally, an unbelted rear passenger dramatically increases the risk of injury to those in the front of a vehicle. Massachusetts law requires every person in a motor vehicle to wear a safety belt or sit in a child restraint.

Any driver who is stopped by a law enforcement officer for a traffic violation, and is not wearing a safety belt can face steep fines. Motorists are encouraged to take a brief moment to buckle up—every trip, every time.” -Massachusetts State Police.
