“Troop B Community Liaison Trooper DeShawn Brown was invited to assist the Amherst Police Department and University of Massachusetts -Amherst Police Department with their “Youth Adventure Camp.”

This camp is comprised of junior high school students from cities and towns across western Massachusetts. Trooper Brown was given the opportunity to utilize his newly acquired skills as a Repetitive Obstacle Performance Evaluation System, or “ROPES,” adventure course facilitator this week, which included overseeing the operation of some of the elements on the course.

Trooper Brown completed The High 5 Adventure Basics Level 1 Training Workshop in July 2021, which allows him to be a facilitator at all “ROPES” adventure courses throughout Massachusetts. During the week, the campers learned the importance of values such as teamwork, patience, problem solving, courage, and respect as they navigated the challenging elements on the “ROPES” course.

Campers also learned about water safety from the MSP Dive Team, MSP Marine Unit, a Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Ranger, and an Environmental Police Officer. The campers enjoyed a demonstration by the MSP dive team, and then spent some time learning about the many types of boats that patrol Massachusetts waterways.

Trooper Brown was thankful to the Amherst Police Department and UMASS Amherst Police Department for inviting the Massachusetts State Police to take part in their Youth Adventure Camp!

Please contact Trooper DeShawn Brown at 857-262-7040 to learn more about ROPES/Adventure courses.”-Massachusetts State Police.
