The Massachusetts State Police are investigating a multiple-vehicle wrong-way crash on Route 93 in Boston early this morning that resulted in the fatality of the wrong-way driver.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. Preliminary investigation indicates that a sport utility vehicle was being operated southbound on the northbound side when, just after the Columbia Road exit, it struck two northbound vehicles, causing non-life threatening injuries to those drivers.
Subsequently, the wrong-way SUV struck a third vehicle, also causing non-life threatening injuries to that driver.
The SUV came to rest in the two rightmost northbound lanes. Its operator, an adult male, was determined to be dead at the scene. All other operators were transported by Boston EMS to Boston Medical Center.
The facts and circumstances of the crash, including why the SUV operator was driving in the wrong direction, remains under investigation by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County.
No further information is being released at this time.
