At approximately 8:00am on Thursday, Maine State Police responded to a report of an accident on the Maine Turnpike Mile Marker 1 southbound in Kittery.

Upon arrival, first responders found that a box truck driven by Manuel Depina-Gonolves, 22, of Boston was traveling south when he rear-ended a fully loaded cement truck driven by Peter Macdonald, 59, of South Berwick, Maine.

Depina-Gonolves was seriously injured in the accident and was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. Macdonald sustained no injuries. Depina-Gonolves injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Maine State Police said speed and following too close were factors in the crash.

The accident shut down one southbound lane for a few hours while the scene was cleaned up and the crash was reconstructed.

Kittery Fire Department and the Maine Turnpike Authority Maintenance crews assisted at the scene.
