An altercation between two motorists on Route 93 in Dorchester this morning led to the arrest of an Avon man for allegedly brandishing a firearm at another motorist.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Martin indicates that at about 7:45 a.m., DANIEL BATES, 33, of Avon was traveling on Route 93 Southbound prior to Exit 12 in Boston in a 2015 Chevrolet pickup when he became involved in an altercation with the operator of a 2007 Honda CRV. During the altercation, BATES allegedly brandished a firearm, and the other operator, a 42-year-old Boston man, allegedly brandished a knife as the two traveled southbound. The operator of the Honda called 911, reported the incident, and remained on the line while giving dispatchers updated locations of both vehicles.

Braintree Police eventually located both operators on Hancock Street in Braintree. Upon further investigation, troopers located and seized a Sig Sauer P320 9mm handgun, which was in BATES’ possession. They also seized a folding knife from the operator of the Honda. BATES was placed under arrest on the following charges:

– Assault with a dangerous weapon
– Disorderly conduct
– Disturbing the peace

Charges are also being considered against the operator of the Honda.

BATES was booked at the State Police barracks in South Boston and will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court today.
