Massachusetts man arrested after crashing into state police cruiser

A driver was arrested Saturday after crashing into the back of a stopped police cruiser. There were no injuries.

On Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 2:47pm an Officer in a marked police cruiser was stopped in traffic on Whiting St. (Route 53) waiting to turn left into 306 Whiting St. when a car traveling in the same direction struck the rear of the cruiser. It appears the driver of the car did not apply the brakes prior to the crash.

The driver and the Officer were wearing seat belts and were not injured. The car, a 2002 Nissan Altima, had heavy front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The cruiser, a 2021 Ford Explorer, had rear-end damage and was not towed.

The driver, Adilson Gomes Barreiro, age 39, of 214 Middle Street, 2nd Floor, Weymouth, MA was charged with:

1) Unlicensed Operation
2) Failure to Use Care when Slowing/Stopping.

He has never had a Massachusetts driver’s license. He was ordered held without bail at the Hingham Police station until his arraignment at Hingham District Court on Monday, December 20, 2021.
