Massachusetts legislator pushes for no cost driver’s licenses for poor

Massachusetts legislator Barbara A. L’Italien is the sponsor of Bill SD.2431, which hopes to eliminate fees for anyone “below 300 per cent of the federal poverty guidelines.”

Here is the text of the bill that was referred to the Joint Committee on Rules on December 21, 2017:

SECTION 1. Section 8 of Chapter 90 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after the words “age of 70.” the following sentence:-

No fees associated with an application for a license shall be charged for a person at or below 300 per cent of the federal poverty guidelines.

SECTION 2. Section 8E of said chapter is hereby amended by inserting after the words “age of 70.” the following sentence:-

No fees associated with an application for an identification card shall be charged for a person at or below 300 per cent of the federal poverty guidelines.
