On July 20, 2017, at approximately 8:17 PM, the Falmouth Fire/Rescue Department, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, the Bourne Police Department, and the Falmouth Police Department responded to a one car crash on North Falmouth Hwy. near the intersection with McMenamy Dr.

The first responding officers found a blue Toyota Scion off of the roadway with a male trapped inside. The car had crashed through utility pole and there were live wires in the roadway.

Officers Martin and Leighton assisted members of the Falmouth Fire Rescue Department in extricating the operator from the vehicle. He was transported to the Falmouth Hospital by FFRD and later transported to a Boston area hospital by a Med-flight ambulance with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department. However, the preliminary investigation indicates that the 2005 Toyota Scion was travelling northerly on North Falmouth Hwy. when it failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The vehicle traveled off of the road and struck a utility pole. The vehicle sustained heavy damage.

The driver was Francis Vierkant, a 58 year-old male from Mashpee. According to the Falmouth Police Department, he has 18 prior drunk driving offenses on his record from Massachusetts and Florida and alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The road was closed for an extended period of time while first responders extricated the driver, the vehicle was removed, and a crew replaced the utility pole.
