Man slashed with machete on Union Street

Last night at approximately 7pm officers Jacob Oliveira and Oteniel Correia responded to a fight in progress outside of 450 Union St. Upon arrival they spoke with the suspect who admitted to having a fight with his friend after they had been drinking together in his second floor apartment. The victim, a 37 yr. old New Bedford man was no longer on scene.

Officers followed a blood trail for several blocks that led them to a Liberty St. home. Upon entering the house, they came across the victim with a 3 inch laceration to his hand that was bleeding heavily. The victim stated that he was drinking with his friend on Union St. and an argument led to a fight. At one point, the suspect swung a machete at him as he tried to defend himself. As a result, he suffered the cut to his hand.

Both males would not say what the fight was about and the victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The machete was also recovered at the scene of the assault.

Scheduled to be arraigned this morning on one count of Assault and Battery with a dangerous weapon, and Assault with intent to maim, is;
